At JP Electric and Son, we often come across fascinating pieces of electrical history while working on older homes. Recently, we had the opportunity to explore a home in Fitchburg built in the late 1800s, uncovering a piece of electrical craftsmanship from a bygone era—an asbestos-lined junction box connecting BX wiring to Knob and Tube wiring.
The Legacy of Thomas Edison’s Fire Safety Innovation
In the early days of electricity, Thomas Edison and his contemporaries understood the risks associated with electrical wiring, particularly the heat generated by conductors. To mitigate fire hazards, they lined junction boxes with fire-resistant materials—the best available at the time being asbestos. This mineral, though now known for its health risks, was widely used for its fire-retardant properties.
The junction box we discovered was a testament to Edison's forward-thinking approach. It showcased how electricians of the past safeguarded homes from potential electrical fires using the best technology of their time.
